Why the CNAM Database Is Still Relevant in 2022

Consumers have zero tolerance for robocalls and unfamiliar callers — 75% refuse to answer a number they don't recognize, and a "spam" or "potential scam" label drops that even further, often triggering an app-based block and a report to the carrier or FCC. What is CNAM?

Caller ID Name (CNAM) is the tried-and-true method for displaying the name of the calling party alongside their number. Registering a number with CNAM ensures the correct business or individual name shows up on the recipient's display, so they can make an informed choice about whether to answer — without it, a call simply appears as an unknown number, more likely to be rejected outright.

How it works

A CNAM display must start with a letter (not a number) and can only include letters, numbers, periods, commas, and spaces. Carriers populate one of several authoritative databases — collectively known as the Line Information Database (LIDB) — with subscriber data, and this registration is the foundational step in protecting a phone number's identity and reputation. CNAM isn't foolproof; it can still be spoofed by scammers, so it works best alongside other protective measures, not instead of them.

How STIR/SHAKEN fits in

STIR/SHAKEN has meaningfully reduced robocalls by authenticating Caller ID across interconnected carrier networks, but it isn't perfect — legitimate numbers still get mislabeled, and lists sometimes include already-flagged numbers without a company realizing it. CNAM registration remains a necessary complement, not a replacement, for STIR/SHAKEN.
